Writers as Readers
by Linda Le
1. When I read, I have to be laying sideways or upside down (my feet keeps me balanced on my bed/sofa, and my head is on ground or in the air). I have no clue how people are able to read by hunching over a book; it's just to uncomfortable, to me. People probably wonder how I lay upside down and read though, but it's just something I've done since I was a kid. I also can't read in school, because it makes me paranoid for some reason. I guess I just don't like people around when I'm reading. I have to be listening to calm music as well and I catch myself singing and reading at once which makes me pretty talented in my opinion. ;)
2. I'm honestly not to picky about what book I read. I don't read as much as I would like to which may explain why I don't have a favorite genre, but a lot of things stand out to me in the various books I have read. If the it's able to relate me to a character or subject in the book, then I'm hooked. My one pet peeve about reading are slow beginnings. I enjoy to jump in and see what it's going to be about.
5. The only book that I remember distinctively wanting to continue reading is The Catcher in the Rye. Holden was so alike to me that it made me continuously read it and kept me intigued. Lately, I haven't read any that has made me as interested, but many books have made me trudge through to finish. The last one was Writing Well, by Stephen King, which I had to read for Grammar and Composition, which it wasn't bad because some parts are much more interesting than others, but it was definitely something that I'd read for fun. . . In fact, a lot of required English books are not in my interest.
6. My first reading teacher that I remember by heart is Mrs. Snapp. She is a great family friend and took care of me when I was kid, and it was so awesome having her as a teacher. I was in 3rd grade, which is probably the time that I read the most out of my entire childhood. I don't know why, but I was just so in love with reading and writing at that time, and I think I won a writing award once every two weeks in that class. I was a ridiculous reader and fantasy writer. I would write even when we weren't supposed to. (I'm a rebel, I know.)
7. I remember reading a book about a mischievous, white Maltese. It wasn't the most interesting series to be completely honest. I just liked the photos when I was a kid and how I was losing teeth the same time the dog was losing teeth in the book. (Yes, the dog lost teeth). I'm not quite sure why I remember this book. . . Maybe because I've read it so much. Haha. Other than that, I remember Shel Silverstein's writings and Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Up Goes Down, and The Giving Tree are the first three books I've ever bought with my own money.
Yes--very rebellious to be writing even when you weren't supposed to! :) I love that...And I love that you cherish the books you bought with your own money.
